Team India will look to return to winning ways when they take on hosts Australia in the third Test of the five-match series beginning at the Gabba in Brisbane from Saturday. The series is currently level at 1-1 with India winning the first Test by 295 runs at Perth while Pat Cummins-led Australia claiming the second ‘Pink Ball’ Test at the Adelaide Oval by 10 wickets last week.
Rohit Sharma’s side have plenty to think about ahead of the third Test with the batting being exposed by the Australian pacers in Adelaide. Apart from a couple of 40s by all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy down the order, all the other Indian batters failed to fire. Skipper Rohit himself is enduring a rough patch in Test cricket and was dismissed for single-digit scores on his return to the side after missing the first match in Perth.
Virat Kohli, who scored his 30th Test ton in Perth, looked vulnerable outside his off-stump in both innings of the game in Adelaide. India will need to sort out these issues if they home to bounce back with a win and keep hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship 2025 Final alive.
“As a batting group, we are looking to post a big total first up. That’s been the key discussion and every batter has his own game plan,” batter Shubman Gill said in the pre-match press conference on Friday.
India have had at least six scores of 150 or less in recent times and Gill admitted that the piece of stat isn’t lost upon the batting group. He said it is now a three-match series for his side.
“Adelaide Test, we didn’t do well but the series is still 1-1. We will treat it as a three-match Test series and if we win this one, we will have advantage going into Melbourne and Sydney,” Gill said.
Australia, on the other hand, are set to bring back Josh Hazlewood to the side who has recovered from injury at the expense of Scott Boland.
