NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) -- One person died in a house fire last week in New Iberia, the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office announced. The victim is believed to be a 74-year-old man who owned the home.
According to a news release, the fire occurred Friday night, Dec. 6., at a home in the 700 block of Elizabeth Street.
Although the victim's official identification and cause of death are pending with the coroner's office, authorities said the victim is believed to be the 74-year-old man who lived at the home.
Fire investigators determined that the fire started in the kitchen area but the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The man was found near a window.
"There is evidence the victim may have attempted to put the fire out before being overcome by smoke," the State Fire Marshal's Office said in the news release.
It is unclear at this time if the home had working smoke alarms.
