NEW YORK (PIX11) – Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday said he and incoming Trump administration border czar Tom Homan “have the same desire” to deport migrants who commit violent crimes in New York City.
Adams and Homan met in New York City Thursday to discuss President-elect Donald Trump's plans for mass deportations. Adams held a press conference following the meeting and said he and Homan are on the same page about who should be deported.
“We have the same desire to go after those who have committed repeated violent acts among innocent New Yorkers and among migrants and asylum seekers. That’s what I heard from him. I was pleased to hear that because we share the same desire,” Adams said.
Adams said he does not believe those deportations would extend to migrants just going about living their daily lives.
“We’re going to protect the rights of immigrants in this city who are hard-working, giving back to this city in a real way. We’re not going to be a safe haven for those who commit repeated violent crimes against innocent migrants, immigrants, and long-standing New Yorkers,” Adams said.
Adams said he is working with his legal team to determine what executive action he would be able to take to help deport people who repeatedly commit violent crimes.
"We need to unravel all these rules and procedures and laws and get clarity on what we can do and what we can't do," Adams said.
