UN General Assembly calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

The United Nations General Assembly, through a resolution, has called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

According to the Associated Press, the UN General Assembly approved this resolution on Wednesday, December 11, by a majority vote.

The resolution was passed with 158 votes in favor out of 193 UN member states.

The resolution also calls for the release of hostages, stating that all hostages must be freed without any conditions.

Reports indicate that the majority of the assembly emphasized that all hostages should be released unconditionally.

Meanwhile, Robert Wood, the Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the UN, had expressed his opposition to the resolution before the vote.

It is worth noting that the United Nations has previously called for ceasefires in the Gaza Strip multiple times.

According to statistics from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, over the course of more than a year of conflict in Gaza, more than 44,000 people have been killed, the majority of whom are women and children.

The UN General Assembly’s resolution reflects the growing international pressure for a ceasefire in Gaza, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The vote underlines the global call for peace and an end to the devastating violence affecting civilians.
