Frank DiLella, host of the “On Stage” program with Spectrum News, just broke some Patti LuPone related news: she loved Sunset Blvd on Broadway!
If you’re not a Broadway superfan, you might not realize that the Tony Award winning star has a long history with Sunset Blvd.
Back in the early 1990s, Patti originated the leading role of Norma Desmond in the London production of the show. She was fired by the show’s creator Andrew Lloyd Webber. Patti ended up suing Webber and they settled for an undisclosed sum, and she was able to build her famous “Andrew Lloyd Webber Memorial Pool” at her home as a result.
Now, Patti was able to catch the current show on Broadway, which stars Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis, and is directed by Jamie Lloyd.

In a voice memo sent to Frank, Patti explained, “I loved it. I saw Sunset Blvd. last night. Now, I went in with trepidation because I have strong feelings about the show, not what happened to me in the show, but the show, period. I loved this production. I thought Nicole [Scherzinger] and Tom [Francis] were stunning. I thought Nicole was unbelievable. She broke my heart. She is a force.”
“I thought the cast was fantastic, the lighting,” she added. “The use of the filming was something that I questioned because I don’t know where I am. Am I at a movie or at the theater? This worked brilliantly. The whole thing. The whole thing. I was energized when I left the theater. I loved it.”
