Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has reacted to Cristian Romero’s comments regarding the Spurs hierarchy, acknowledging the defender’s frustration while emphasising the need for unity in the squad.
Recent weeks have seen Tottenham Hotspur embroiled in controversy, as fans and players alike question the club’s direction amid disappointing performances.
While head coach Ange Postecoglou has faced his share of criticism, a significant portion of the frustration is now aimed at chairman Daniel Levy.
Many believe the club’s hierarchy has failed to provide successive managers with the resources needed to succeed at the top level.
Romero, the club’s vice-captain, is one who aired his opinion on this matter. He acknowledged that Spurs’ struggles cannot be pinned solely on players or coaching staff.
In a forthright interview, he stated: “The last few years, it’s always the same: first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible.”
In response to Cristian Romero’s remarks, Ange Postecoglou offered a measured but pointed reaction, seeking to defuse the controversy while addressing the underlying issues at Spurs.
Speaking to football.london, Postecoglou expressed empathy for the Argentine defender but also emphasised the need for unity within the squad.
He said: “He was very emotional. He hasn’t been able to help us on the pitch. I think that was his way of trying to help. We’re going through a tough time and he believes in what we’re doing.
“The other part [about the hierarchy], he probably went about it the wrong way. I don’t think our challenges at the moment are about one person. I haven’t and have never believed that.
“To come through this, that’ll only happen if we remain united. Cristian, he realises that a lot of what he said was good but some wasn’t the right way of dealing with it. The same way I wouldn’t criticise a player publicly.
“I’ve spoken to Cristian about it and he’s apologised for it. It wasn’t the right way to do it. It shows he cares. There’s a way to do it and this wasn’t it.”
Postecoglou’s response highlights the balancing act required of any manager navigating a challenging period.
While Romero’s comments have sparked debate, they also underscore the importance of unity within the Tottenham squad, particularly as the team faces the daunting task of turning their season around.
It is crucial that the players and coaching staff avoid being distracted by external pressures, such as fan discontent or scrutiny of the hierarchy, and instead channel their focus into improving on the pitch.
Postecoglou’s call for collective responsibility resonates, offering a reminder that achieving success will depend on cohesion and resilience.
