Ange Postecoglou may change his mind about signing a defender in January on the back of the claim he made in the summer regarding Tottenham’s defensive stocks.
On paper, Tottenham technically have cover for all of their back four positions, but they have struggled to put a back four out there at times over recent weeks because several centre-backs have been out injured at the same time.
Young Archie Gray has had to fill in at the heart of the Spurs defence on a few occasions, which is far from ideal for Postecoglou.
One would expect the club to enter the market in January to reinforce their options at the back, particularly given that Cristian Romero and Ben Davies are both out with serious injuries.
Kilpatrick pointed out that the Spurs head coach had previously pointed out that signing another central defender may block the progress of the young defenders at the club.
However, the journalist suggested that the Australian might do a U-turn on the matter and another centre-back to his squad in the upcoming transfer window.
Kilpatrick wrote in his Evening Standard column: “The decision not to sign a defender in the summer appeared strange and it is no easier to fathom now, particularly given Postecoglou’s reluctance to use Djed Spence. Spurs are short of cover at centre-half and left-back, so a player who could cover both positions in January feels like a priority.
“The club are sweating over Cristian Romero‘s possible quad injury sustained against Chelsea, amid reports he could be sidelined for most of January, while Ben Davies picked up a hamstring strain at Bournemouth.
“Postecoglou suggested in September that signing another centre-back may block Ashley Phillips, 19, and Luka Vuskovic, 17, (both currently on loan) from breaking into the team in future but Spurs need experience now, not more promising teenagers.”
While Tottenham are fairly well stocked at right-back, the two areas where they might need one more body are in the middle and on the left.
Spurs may decide to let Djed Spence leave on loan if they sign a left-back. Another option would be to sign a versatile left-footed defender who can operate in both positions.
