Calls have grown incessant for Ange Postecoglou to adapt

With each defeat Tottenham suffer, you see more and more pundits writing off Postecoglou as a one-trick pony and suggesting that his methods cannot work in the Premier League.

The latest such comment came from Jamie Carragher, who told Sky Sports following Spurs‘ loss to Chelsea that the Australian will not be in his job too long if he does not adapt his tactics to specific opposition and state of the game.

The one thing we know about Postecoglou by now is that he is not one to be swayed by the noise as he has unwavering belief in his approach.

Andros Townsend says Postecoglou is on the right path

Townsend pointed out that pundits never ask the likes of Pep Guardiola why he does not play a different way, explaining that Postecoglou was brought in to deliver high-octane, attacking football.

Despite Spurs‘ recent slump, the Tottenham academy graduate believes that the 59-year-old can bring success to the club.

Townsend told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club: “Everyone knows Ange’s philosophy. When Pep lost a match or when Klopp lost a match, nobody was saying ‘why don’t you change?’ Why don’t you play five at the back? Why don’t you play ugly?

“He was brought in to bring that attacking football back to Tottenham, what they were renowned for 15/20 years ago and they’ve lost their way a bit. I don’t think they’re far off – you don’t watch that game on Sunday and think ‘Chelsea outclassed us, they were miles better than us.’

“For the first 15 minutes Spurs were electric. Chelsea couldn’t play out, Tottenham scored two early goals, and then they’ve allowed them in the game. They got one or two injuries, and it just didn’t go their way. I honestly believe they’re on the right track. They should stick with Ange and see where he can take them this season.”

Chris Sutton backs up Townsend’s claim

Chris Sutton also offered his support to Postecoglou, calling on pundits to accept that the former Celtic boss will not change his ways.

The 51-year-old said: “He’s been in the job 18 months – I think there needs to be a bit of patience. He won’t change – that’s what people need to get their head around.”
