Bill Belichick To UNC Done? Conflicting Reports On Patriots Legend

Bill Belichick is set to become a Tar Heel… maybe.

ABC11 reported on Wednesday that the University of North Carolina board of trustees will meet to approve a contract, making the former New England Patriots boss their next head football coach.

Brendan Marks of The Athletic reported otherwise, saying there was no meeting and it is “possible that this falls apart.”

Hmm.

It’s been a relatively quick rise to this position for Belichick, whose interest was first reported last week. UNC recently received an “organizational bible” from the eight-time Super Bowl champion, which outlined structure, payment plans and staffing choices.

The Tar Heels reportedly would be agreeing to salary minimums by position by approving the move and would have to hire two staffs — a coaching staff and a recruitment staff, the latter of which will be run by a sitting college general manager who would require a buyout. Steve Belichick is also expected to become head coach in waiting, as he’ll join the current staff in a prominent defensive role.

Belichick confirmed he had “a couple of good conversations” with North Carolina chancellor Lee H. Roberts on Monday’s episode of the “Pat McAfee Show” — responding to reports surfaced that he interviewed for the position. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that he met with North Carolina officials for five hours on Sunday.

Belichick, 72, immediately would become the oldest coach in college football, sliding into the chair previously occupied by the man he’ll also be replacing at North Carolina — Mack Brown.
