MLB Rumors: Red Sox Beat Out 5 Teams For Garrett Crochet

After missing out on landing Max Fried, the Boston Red Sox finally made a move to acquire Garret Crochet from the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Red Sox got their man by beating out several other clubs.

“The Red Sox got serious in trade talks for Garrett Crochet last night,” Nightengale wrote on his X account. “There were 5 teams in serious discussions, White Sox GM Chris Getz says.”

It’s unknown which teams the Red Sox beat out for Crochet. However, the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, and Baltimore Orioles were all in discussions at one point with Getz for the All-Star pitcher.

The Dodgers apparently moved on when they signed Blake Snell, the Yankees closed the book after completing a deal with Fried on Tuesday and Getz had no intention of trading Crohet to the crosstown rival Cubs, according to Nightengale.

The Phillies couldn’t compete with the Red Sox because they didn’t want to trade top prospects, shortstop Aidan Miller and right-hander Andrew Painter, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Corey Seidman.

“Not sure it was the right time for us to do that right now, and I think there’s a few reasons behind that. One is that (the White Sox) got a nice group of players, from what I read,” Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said, per Seidman. “We have four quality starting pitchers and a young pitcher coming right behind him that we really like a whole bundle.

“To give up that type of talent … we really rode out the development of our farm system over the last few years, and we’re just getting to the point of having the impact of those guys. It’s not quite here, but we’re on the verge of having some really good young, homegrown players.”

According to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy, the Milwaukee Brewers were “serious suitors” for Crochet before the Red Sox were able to swing the blockbuster deal.

“The Brewers were serious suitors for Garrett Crochet before the White Sox traded him to the Red Sox,” McCalvy posted on X. “And, it would have hurt them in terms of prospect capital. But Boston won out.”

The Red Sox sent Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez to the White Sox to facilitate the Crochet trade.
