'Unimaginable ordeal': Hannah Kobayashi found safe after disappearing for a month

Hannah Kobayashi, the young Hawaii woman who mysteriously vanished after apparently voluntarily crossing the border from southern California into Mexico, has been found safe, NBC News reported Wednesday.

“This past month has been an unimaginable ordeal for our family, and we kindly ask for privacy as we take the time to heal and process everything we have been through,” Kobayashi's mother and sister said in a statement to the media.

The case mystified the nation after Kobayashi, an aspiring artist who had been traveling to New York City to visit the Museum of Modern Art, "missed her connecting flight and was reported missing five days later, after sending a message to her family that described being scared and suggested that someone may be trying to steal her money and identity, according to her aunt."

Los Angeles police "found video showing Kobyashi crossing into Mexico via a San Diego land port on Nov. 12," although they emphasized "that Kobyashi intentionally missed her flight and that there was no evidence of human trafficking or foul play."

Further details of when or where she was found have not been disclosed.

However, this comes after reports that her family had been investigating whether the 30-year-old woman was roped into a green card marriage scam — a development that caused the case to be thrust into further public scrutiny.

Her family stressed that they had no evidence this was the case and asked the media and public to refrain from "jumping to conclusions."
