Matt Gaetz lining up a second job — teaming up with a Democratic megadonor: report

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) may be in line for another job — this time working for a Democratic megadonor.

Politico reported the eyebrow-raising news Wednesday, noting that John Morgan is in active discussions to have the one-time attorney general nominee join his Florida law firm of Morgan & Morgan. The gig would be in addition Gaetz's new role — only announced this week — as a primetime host on the right-wing One America News Network. That role is expected to begin next month.

"A lot of the things that my politics are, Matt Gaetz’s are," Morgan told the publication, adding that Gaetz could prove useful in a recent lawsuit his firm filed that accuses large food companies of manipulating their products to be more addictive and marketing those to children.

Gaetz confirmed to Politico in a text message that he and Morgan have discussed joining forces.

"I’ve known John Morgan for more than a decade. I’ve taken a lot of advice from him on matters of law, policy and politics. I have great respect for how he stands to the powerful for his clients — and he wins," said Gaetz.

The fit appears to be a curious one for both men.

Morgan has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years to Democratic causes across the country, including $355,000 to the Biden Victory Fund in August 2020, $109,500 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2022, $100,000 to Terry McAuliffe's campaign for Virginia governor in 2020 and $35,500 to the Democratic National Committee in 2020.

Gaetz, meanwhile, has been an ally of President-elect Donald Trump and has taken several right-wing stances throughout his political career, including opposing sanctuary cities — campaigning that undocumented immigrants were “sucking us dry” — opposing gun restrictions and taking an anti-abortion stance.

Gaetz's tenure in Congress came to an abrupt end when he resigned days ahead of a House Ethics Committee vote on whether to release a report on its investigation into serious allegations against Gaetz, including sex trafficking of a minor, sexual misconduct with a minor, drug use bribery and misusing campaign funds.

He has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
