Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, Afghanistan’s Acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, was killed along with several others in a suicide attack targeting the ministry’s headquarters, according to official sources.
The Taliban spokesperson announced that Khalil ur-Rahman Haqqani, the group’s Minister of Refugees, was killed in a “brutal” attack by ISIS. Zabihullah Mujahid, in a statement, called Haqqani’s death a “great loss” for the Taliban.
He wrote that the “Khawarij,” who claim to be Muslims, were responsible for killing Khalil ur-Rahman Haqqani.
Taliban officials refer to the ISIS group as “Khawarij.”
So far, ISIS has not claimed responsibility for the killing of the Taliban Minister of Refugees.
Meanwhile, Taliban members released images of the attacker who assassinated Khalil ur-Rahman Haqqani on Wednesday. The Taliban said the attacker had a metal rod in his hand and told the guards that his hand had been surgically treated. He then detonated the materials he was carrying during the official meeting.
In 2011, the U.S. government designated Khalil ur-Rahman Haqqani as a “global terrorist” and set a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture.
The Taliban spokesperson described the attack as “cowardly,” stating that the group’s opponents will not achieve their goal of overthrowing the Taliban regime through such actions.
Mujahid added that despite the brutal nature of Haqqani’s assassination, the Taliban remains resolute in its stance, asserting that such attacks will not weaken their hold on power or their ideological resolve.
ISIS-Khorasan has frequently targeted high-ranking Taliban figures, including the assassinations of Mullah Dawood Muzammil and Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, claiming responsibility for such attacks.
This attack highlights the persistent violence and instability in Afghanistan, even though the Taliban asserts control over the country. The ongoing attacks on important Taliban officials demonstrate the internal and external struggles the regime is dealing with, especially from extremist groups that oppose its rule.
