'He wants his face chiseled on a mountain': Lawmakers scoff at Trump's monumental pledge

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump continues to work on filling his Cabinet, but he's also considering major policy initiatives that he hopes to push through Congress when he arrives in Washington.

Among those is building more monuments.

"America is going to start building monuments to our great heroes and heroines again!!!," he posted on Truth Social on Tuesday morning.

However, if he intends to put himself in Mount Rushmore, one lawmaker said he'll be out of luck.

"I think he wants his face chiseled on a mountain," said Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), speculating on Trump's post. "Maybe he means that."

When asked what she thinks if he sent that funding bill to Congress, Lofgren said frankly, "It would not pass." Even with the Republican majority, she said it had no chance.

Rep. John Larson (D-CT) said he's empathetic to preserving history, but he's not certain that's what Trump is doing here.

"Why he says it is the motive of aggravating people saying this is the woke agenda and stuff," Larson speculated.

When Raw Story approached Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) he laughed boisterously at the idea of needing more monuments.

"Trump being Trump," he said. "I'm sure those monuments will be in celebration of our heritage and history, right? The confederate heritage of history. So, [it's] Trump being Trump. There's no surprise."

Bowman went on to say that he saw Trump's interview on "Meet the Press" and that he's still saying outlandish things but that he appears more experienced.

"It seems like he's been coached to be more polished in how he says certain things," Bowman continued. "So it doesn't land so hard on the American public. I think he's saying things differently. Still, it's crazy to me. A lot of it."

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) didn't know that Trump campaigned to build federal monuments. It was an issue that his hometown of Memphis resolved when they moved a monument to slave trader and Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest to the middle of the state where he was buried.

"Well, Kamala Harris], one of her things is 'We're not going back.' Well, he's back," Cohen said. "Maybe he'll only do them in Florida. Maybe on the beach."

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said that at no time during the 2024 election cycle did he hear of an outcry to put up more Confederate monuments.
