NEW JERSEY (PIX11)—New Jersey lawmakers are putting pressure on the federal government to release details about the mysterious drone sightings that have been occurring for weeks across the State.
“I’m not asking for all the secrets,” said Middletown Mayor Tony Perry. “I just want to know and ensure that the safety and security of my residents is maintained.”
Several New Jersey mayors said they know just as little as ordinary citizens do about the sightings.
“The governor told me Sunday night that he has been told nothing. He doesn’t have details,” said Mine Hill Mayor Sam Morris. “And I believe him.”
Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County has reported 11 confirmed drone sightings since November 13th.
“It’s not the result of any Picatinny activity,” said Tim Rider, Public Affairs Specialist for Picatinny Arsenal.
Naval Weapons Station Earle in Middletown has also confirmed at least one instance of an unidentified drone entering its airspace.
NJ Congressman Josh Gottheimer said drone activity recently prevented a medical helicopter from helping a car crash victim in Somerset County. He does not, however, believe the activity overall is nefarious.
“Based on the briefings that I’ve received in a classified setting, I’m not concerned about any imminent threats to public safety regarding these drones,” said Gottheimer.
Retired U.S. Air Force Major General James Poss tends to agree.
“They’re flying with lights on,” said Gen. Poss. “They’re flying over areas where people will see them…That tells me one of two things: either there’s nothing nefarious about them, or we’re dealing with the world’s dumbest terrorists.”
NJ Governor Phil Murphy and NJ State Police are expected to meet with a select group of mayors on Wednesday morning to brief them on the latest information regarding the drone sightings.
