Jamie Carragher is appalled by VAR’s interpretation of an incident that took place in the first-half of Tottenham’s loss to Chelsea on Thursday.
The incident took place in the 33rd minute of the game, with Moises Caicedo going full speed into a challenge with Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr and catching him on the shin.
Not only was the Chelsea man late on the tackle but he also caught the Spurs midfielder high up on the shin.
However, the referee did not even book the Ecuadorian for the foul while VAR chose not to intervene.
Carragher is convinced that Caicedo should have received his marching orders and was shocked at VAR’s reasoning that the tackle lacked excessive force.
Martin Tyler told Sky Sports (08/12/24 – 17:02) about the incident: “In the words of the VAR – ‘lacks excessive force’.”
Carragher replied: “I mean that is unbelievable. Listen, I don’t like seeing people sent off, I always think the officials should do as much as they possibly can to keep the game 11 vs 11 but I was absolutely certain that was going to be a red card.”
Caicedo was never getting to the ball and was extremely late in his challenge. Sarr and the Tottenham players did the Chelsea star a favour with the way they reacted.
One gets the feeling that if the 22-year-old had gone to the ground screaming and rolled around, and the Spurs players reacted by furiously protesting to the referee, VAR might have looked at the incident with more seriousness.
What is certain is that if the on-field referee had sent Caicedo off, VAR would not have overturned that decision.
