The absentees continue to mount for Ange Postecoglou, who will now be without another key player for Tottenham’s trip to Southampton on Sunday.
Richarlison, Wilson Odobert, Cristian Romero, Mikey Moore, Ben Davies, and Guglielmo Vicario are all out injured, while question marks remain over Micky van de Ven, who came off after feeling tightness in his hamstrings against Chelsea.
To make matters worse, Rodrigo Bentancur, who is arguably Spurs’ best midfielder, is currently serving a suspension.
That is why Postecoglou himself candidly admitted after the defeat to Chelsea that he needs more bodies through the door in January.
The Tottenham head coach told Sky Sports: “We’re thin on numbers and if we’re thin in January, we’ll be looking to add to the squad because they need some help.”
To make matters worse, Spurs will now be without Yves Bissouma for their trip to St Mary’s on Sunday.
The Mali international picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Chelsea for his rash tackle which gave away a penalty, which will mean that he will now serve a one-game suspension (Alasdair Gold).
This is the last thing that Postecoglou needed at this time, with Bentancur already out of action.
With Bentancur still having four games left of his seven-match suspension (if it is not reduced), Postecoglou would have been desperately hoping that Bissouma would not pick up a yellow for a few games.
Now that the Mali international has been suspended, the Tottenham head coach will have a huge dilemma on his hands on who he partners alongside Pape Sarr for Sunday’s clash.
