At least four people died after a bus driver crashed into a street market in Mumbai, India.
The bus was driving through the eastern suburb of Kurla when the electric vehicle’s brake failed at around 9.50pm local time, officials believe.
Speeding off the carriageway and onto a footpath, the bus smashed into several cars and dozens of people opposite the Anjuman-e-Islam school.
The number 332 bus, en route from Kurla to Andheri train stations, then crashed into the gates of a housing society along Kurla West Railway Station Road.
At least 29 people were injured in the collision, though no official death toll has been given yet, according to The Indian Express. How many people were on board the bus at the time of the crash is unclear.
The bus driver, who has since been arrested, was taken to hospital.
Photographs show the street rammed with on-lookers and traffic at a standstill. The bus wreckage was recovered an hour later.
Kurla West Railway Station Road is notorious among locals, according to The Times of India. Often heaving with traffic, drivers use the narrow road to get between the Bandra Kurla Complex business district and SCLR, a major motorway.
An increasing number of hawkers have set up illegal shops along the market area of the street.
Dr Padmashree Ahire, medical superintendent at Kurla Bhabha Hospital, said 20 people have been brought in so far, of which three were declared dead. Ten people have been seriously injured.
‘More are expected to arrive,’ the doctor added.
Kurla legislator Mangesh Kudalka said he would ask the government to compensate the loved ones of the victims.
The bus was operated by BEST, a state-owned bus company.
