This weekend, Charli XCX proved she’s not slowing down anytime soon when she attended the Hitmakers brunch at NYA West in Hollywood. The self-declared 365 party girl is on a bit of a victory lap after her album Brat owned Summer 2024 (and the Fall, and now the Winter). While accepting the 2024 Hitmakers Award, Charli rocked a tan sheer gown, which was both provocative and paradoxically understated. In other words: cool.
While the so-called “naked dress” is something that fashionistas note is very on-trend for the 2020s, the truth is, a sheer dress like the Saint Laurent piece Charli just wore is an update of something that’s worked for decades. 80s and 90s supermodels like Stephanie Seymour and Christie Brinkley donned sheer dresses all the time. So, yes, Charli is “on-trend,” but she’s also demonstrating that she understands how to be a true classic.
In a sense, Charli’s sheer gown proves that her musical talent extends to her intergenerational success. Despite being a Gen-Z icon and mega-hit maker, Charli XCX is very much a millennial, with Brat tackling early 30s topics like becoming disillusioned with a party lifestyle and worrying if she's running out of time to have children.
The 32-year-old had a massive summer with her smash album Brat, which, for those of us who remember listening to Charli on the Girls soundtrack ten years ago, felt both retro and new at the same time. With songs like “Apple” and “360” Charli isn’t a singer just for the cool, super-young kids, she’s actually got crossover appeal, which is partly why Brat was such a big deal.
With seven nominations at next year's Grammy Awards, we may complete a full 365-day cycle of Brat.
