Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, the Prime Minister of Syria, confirmed the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, stating that this marks the beginning of a “new phase.” Until the transfer of power, he will oversee the management of organizations and ministries.
In his message to the people on Sunday, December 8, al-Jalali said, “I will be present at the Prime Minister’s office on Sunday morning and am ready to take any necessary actions for the peaceful transfer of power.”
He urged the public to avoid damaging public and state property and to think rationally about the country’s interests.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, the Syrian Prime Minister also mentioned that “most of the Syrian ministers are present in Damascus.”
He further emphasized that an agreement had been reached with the military command center regarding the “preservation of state institutions in Syria.”
Regarding Bashar al-Assad’s escape, al-Jalali stated, “I am unaware of Assad’s whereabouts and the time of his departure from Syria. My last contact with Assad was yesterday afternoon.”
Haitham al-Bahra, the head of the main opposition group to Bashar al-Assad’s government, who is based in Turkey, also told Al Arabiya that “the power transfer process will be coordinated by the United Nations, and government offices will resume normal operations within two days.”
Syrian rebels, in a statement, declared that the Assad family’s dictatorship, which had ruled Syria for over five decades, was “overthrown by the people.”
As the country faces this historic shift, the international community’s involvement will be crucial in ensuring a smooth transition. The United Nations, alongside regional powers, will likely play a key role in facilitating the political process and providing support for the rebuilding of Syria’s institutions.
While Syria enters a new phase, challenges remain, and the situation could take unpredictable turns. The process of power transition and the future of the Syrian state will depend heavily on how different political factions and international actors collaborate in the coming days and weeks.
