Iranian Journal: Climate Change to intensify Iran-Afghanistan water crisis
The Iranian Journal “Diplomacy Iranian” has examined Iran’s water challenges with its neighbors, stating that the water crisis in the region, particularly between Iran and Afghanistan, will be heavily impacted by climate change and poor water management in the coming years.
The author of the article warns that water crises in the Middle East, especially the water conflict between Iran and its neighbors, will be increasingly influenced by climate change and mismanagement of water resources in the years ahead.
The article explains that under the Helmand (Hirmand) Treaty, Iran is entitled to about 850 million cubic meters of water annually from the Helmand River as its water share, based on an agreement between Afghanistan and Iran.
Seyed Kamran Yeganeh, the author of the article, states that Afghanistan has repeatedly violated this agreement. He refers to the construction of the Kajaki Dam and other water development projects in Afghanistan, which have reduced the natural flow of the Helmand River.
The article also mentions that “this has had serious negative effects on the southeastern regions of Iran, especially Sistan and Baluchestan, leading to severe droughts and a livelihood crisis in these areas.”
The author recommends that Iran adopt a comprehensive and coordinated approach, particularly in the field of water diplomacy, to prevent new crises. According to this expert, Iran must move toward more sustainable cooperation.
