Amid multiple media speculations about the whereabouts of Bashar al-Assad, Russia’s Channel One television, citing the Kremlin, reported that Bashar al-Assad and his family are in Moscow.
The television network quoted the Kremlin, confirming that Assad and his family are currently in the Russian capital.
Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Ministry had issued a statement saying that Assad, after negotiating with several participants in the Syrian conflict, resigned from the presidency and left Syria. He also ordered the peaceful transfer of power. Russia, however, did not participate in these negotiations.
Meanwhile, British media agency Reuters had claimed that Assad’s plane might have crashed while attempting to leave Syria, and that the Syrian leader might have died in the accident. This claim, however, remains unverified.
Syrian armed opposition forces, after recent advances that began in Aleppo and reached Hama, moved southward toward Damascus. On Sunday morning, they entered the Syrian capital and seized control, marking a significant turning point in the conflict.
In the wake of these developments, questions surrounding Assad’s fate and the future of Syria’s leadership continue to raise concerns. While the Kremlin’s statement offers some clarity on his whereabouts, the situation in Syria remains unstable, with opposition forces solidifying their hold over key territories.
The international community is now watching closely to see how Russia, as a key ally of Assad, will navigate the ongoing crisis. The power vacuum created by Assad’s absence could lead to further complications in Syria’s already volatile political landscape.
