TOPEKA (KSNT) - It's the season of holiday festivities and one church in the capital city is bringing the holiday spirit to life.
On Sunday evening, First Lutheran Church held a live nativity scene in the back parking lot of the building. Cars were able to drive by and watch actors present various scenes portraying the story of Christmas. Cars that came by were given an MP3 player with a recorded narration of the performance for free.
The church has been putting this live-action performance on for 48 years. In total, they had 100 people filling 231 jobs.
Viewers were able to see a plethora of live animals during the performance including goats, sheep, lamas, and donkeys. All the animals were leased from a local farmer.
Director of the event, Jeff Montague, says this tradition is a holiday favorite for many.
"A lot of people come through every year. It's a strong family tradition for them and we want to keep that alive," Montague said. "And traditions are things that give people security, it's something people can hold on to, and at this time of year I think that's really, really important."
The church tells 27 News it takes them about a whole year to plan this event for the holidays.
