LAWRENCE (KSNT) - KU football will have a new leader on the defensive side of the ball heading into the 2024-25 season.
D.K. McDonald, the former co-defensive backs coach and cornerbacks coach, will be KU's new defensive coordinator, Lance Leipold announced Sunday afternoon. The announcement comes in conjunction with former DC Brian Borland's retirement.
“I have been fortunate to work with Brian for more than 18 years, he is the ultimate professional, selfless coworker and I am grateful for his commitment and impact that he has made on so many throughout his career,” Leipold said in a press release from KU Athletics.
Leipold said he and Borland had discussions weeks prior to KU's final regular season game. Borland's been on staff at Kansas for the past four seasons, and with Leipold for the past 18. While at KU, Borland coached 17 All Big-12 players, two NFL draft picks and one Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
“I am extremely thankful for all the experiences granted over the course of my career," Borland said in a press release from KU Athletics. "I’m a most fortunate man. I owe a particular debt of gratitude to Lance Leipold, who has demonstrated tremendous loyalty and trust in me over the years."
McDonald came to Lawrence in early 2024 after spending three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Prior to the NFL, he spent five seasons on staff with Iowa State.
“I’m excited to take this next step as the defensive coordinator at Kansas,” McDonald said in a press release from KU Athletics. “I am grateful to have been able to work with Brian and the defensive staff over this past year, and I look forward to continuing to mentor and guide our student-athletes."
