The Tottenham Hotspur manager has made a bold claim about the player he believes has been their best this season.
Tottenham Hotspur have experienced a season of highs and lows, with performances that have alternated between brilliance and inconsistency.
After a disappointing end to the 2023/24 campaign, where a late slump dashed their hopes of securing a top-four finish, Spurs entered this season with renewed determination under their new manager, Ange Postecoglou.
Fans of the North London club have been desperate for a fresh start, and while results have varied, some standout performances have kept the optimism alive.
One of those standout performer is Dejan Kulusevski. The 24-year-old Swede had a challenging 2023/24 season, where he contributed 11 direct goal involvements across 39 games, often featuring out wide.
This season, under Postecoglou, Kulusevski’s role has evolved. He has transitioned into a more central position, showcasing his creativity and ability to influence games in a way that has drawn comparisons to footballing legends.
Speaking to football.london in a recent press conference, Postecoglou made it clear who he believes has been Tottenham’s best player this year.
The Australian manager’s reasoning reflects both tactical insight and a desire to protect his star performer.
“You have always got to make decisions you think are right, I am never going to make decisions to alleviate or appease people’s opinions.
“Deki has been our best player this year, and I want to protect him because there is no chance he can play all these games we have got. Like I say, even if they can play, performance will invariably drop because it is not sustainable.
“We have to pick and choose. I thought the weekend game, particularly with Pape and Madders and Biss in then, we are missing Bentancur as well, whenever I was going to leave him out, it would leave a bit of a gap.”
Postecoglou’s decision to single out Kulusevski as Tottenham’s standout player is both logical and well-deserved.
The Swedish international’s ability to adapt to a more central role has unlocked a new dimension in his game, making him instrumental in Tottenham’s attacking play.
What stands out most is how Kulusevski has embraced the responsibility that comes with his new position. His creativity, vision, and ability to make those around him better have set him apart this season.
Postecoglou’s tactical switch to deploy him centrally has undoubtedly been a masterstroke, giving Spurs a focal point that complements their fluid style of play.
With Kulusevski already close to matching his previous season’s output and showing no signs of slowing down, it is clear why Postecoglou holds him in such high regard.
If his current trajectory continues, Kulusevski could not only solidify his place as Spurs’ player of the season but also become one of the Premier League’s standout performers.
