Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on a young Uzbek talent, Abdukodir Khusanov, who has been impressing in Ligue 1. The centre-back’s rise has been swift, and Spurs are reportedly keen on bringing him to North London in 2025.
But with competition mounting, the road to signing him could be far from straightforward.
At just 20 years old, Abdukodir Khusanov has already etched his name into the history books as the first Uzbekistani player to compete in France’s Ligue 1.
His move to RC Lens last summer marked a milestone for the young defender, who quickly adapted to the demands of top-tier French football.
Khusanov’s debut season in France has been a promising one. Despite a red card against Paris Saint-Germain in November, which sidelined him for two matches, the centre-back has been a regular fixture in Will Still’s starting lineup throughout the 2024/25 campaign.
His consistency and maturity on the ball have made him a key figure in the team’s defence. It is no surprise that Khusanov’s performances have attracted attention from top clubs across Europe.
According to reports from CaughtOffside, sources have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have already shown a keen interest in Khusanov, with scouts having attended multiple Lens fixtures this season to monitor his progress.
Tottenham are understood to be impressed with the youngster’s potential and may look to bring him to North London as early as the 2025 transfer window.
However, the asking price for Khusanov could present a challenge. RC Lens are aware of Tottenham’s interest and have reportedly set a price tag of €15m-20m on the 20-year-old’s head.
Sources indicate that this figure could rise depending on his performances throughout the remainder of the season, as Lens are under no pressure to sell with Khusanov still under contract until 2027.
The competition for Khusanov is fierce. Tottenham are not the only Premier League club eyeing the defender, as Newcastle United are also monitoring his development with the possibility of making a move as soon as January.
Yet, it seems that Lens would prefer to wait until the end of the current campaign before sanctioning a transfer. With a price tag still looming, it remains uncertain whether Spurs will be able to secure a deal before the Magpies or any other interested parties.
Interestingly, Ange Postecoglou had a chance to sign the Uzbekistan international for a mere £100,000 just 18 months ago, but for reasons unknown, that opportunity slipped through their fingers.
With Spurs currently in a position of need for defensive reinforcements, there may be some regret over missing that chance, especially now that Khusanov’s value has skyrocketed.
Whether the Lilywhites are able to jump ahead of Newcastle or any other interested clubs could depend on how well Khusanov continues to develop in the second half of the season.
Should Spurs remain serious in their pursuit, they will need to move quickly and decisively. Time will tell if they can land the 20-year-old, but the opportunity to sign such a promising talent may prove to be too good to pass up for both the club and the player.
