Michelle Yeoh had some concerns about starring in Wicked, but some of her costars convinced her to join the cast.
The Oscar-winning actress brings Madame Morrible to life in the big-screen adaptation of the classic musical, which was directed by her Crazy Rich Asians collaborator Jon M. Chu.
While at the Red Sea Film Festival, Michelle said that Jon “could throw the phonebook at me, and I would say yes.” However, she wasn’t sure that she was the best fit for a musical.
It took a message from two costars to get her to change her mind.

Castmates Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sent Michelle a video from set. That helped seal the deal for her.
“Michelle, it is imperative that you join us,” she recalled them saying, via Variety.
She continued, saying, “Cynthia and Ariana are so different but they fit each other perfectly.”
“When we were shooting Wicked, I was doing the Oscar run to try pushing Everything Everywhere All at Once. To come back to that set was grounding. When you are doing the Oscar thing it is wild and you are so scared that you are going to put the wrong foot forward and jeopardize your film. Coming back to Wicked was love.”
