Puppy food sold in New York recalled due to salmonella contamination: FDA

(WKBN) — A dog food specifically for puppies that has been sold in multiple states has been recalled due to salmonella concerns, according to the FDA.

Blue Ridge Beef, a company out of North Carolina, is recalling its 2-pound log Puppy Mix due to salmonella contamination.

A litter of puppies became ill after eating the mix, a customer told the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. On November 27, the FDA informed Blue Ridge Beef that the puppy mix had tested positive for salmonella.

According to the FDA, salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after touching them.

The recalled food came in clear plastic, with the label pictured below. It was distributed between August 6-23, 2024 in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It has a lot #08/06/N25 & 08/16/N25 and is under UPC 854298001696.

If you have any of the recalled food, the FDA recommends returning it to the place of purchase or destroying it so children and animals cannot eat or encounter it. The food should not be given to pets, and any potentially impacted food dishes should be sanitized.

The FDA also encourages pet owners to wash and sanitize their hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food. 

The FDA said pets with salmonella infections may be tired and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some may only experience decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain.

A pet may also show no signs but be a carrier and infect other animals or humans. If you are concerned your pet may be infected, the FDA recommends contacting your veterinarian.

Healthy people infected with salmonella should watch for symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever.

Some people may experience more serious complications, like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. If you develop these symptoms after touching this dog food, the FDA encourages contacting your healthcare provider.
