The Boston Red Sox aren’t placing all of their eggs in a singular basket.
Yes, even if Juan Soto is holding it.
Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow addressed a wealth of rumors in his conversation with MassLive’s Sean McAdam on Friday. It’s hard not to get caught up on one juicy tidbit that was provided, however — which could easily be related to Soto.
“I think the one thing we want to avoid is putting ourselves in a position where the success of our offseason hinges on a single transaction, because there’s just too much uncertainty around any of that,” Breslow said. “We have to constantly think about, ‘OK, this is Plan A, but if that falls through, what does Plan B look like, and what does Plan C look like?’ And so on.”
Boston has been tied to a wealth of free agents this offseason, though Soto really is the only notable position player to gain any steam.
Max Fried and Corbin Burnes, two high-profile starting pitchers, have also reportedly met with team brass and are very much in consideration to be added. The expectation is that most free agents are waiting for the 26-year-old slugger to make his decision, though.
It’s a waiting game until then.
