NEW YORK (PIX11) – The NYPD shot and killed a man during a police-involved shooting on Thursday afternoon. The man had been wanted for committing a ‘vicious’ homicide in Brooklyn, NYDP Chief of Department Jeffrey B. Maddrey said.
The suspect had been on the run since March. Officials declined to name the suspect pending family notification.
On Thursday, the suspect was involved in a shooting with NYPD officers after a ShotSpotter detected shots fired near Myrtle and Portland Avenues in Fort Greene, sources told PIX11 News. Officers tried to pull over a black Honda with Mississippi license plates regarding the incident near Utica Avenue and Park Place in Crown Heights.
When officers were able to stop the black Honda, NYPD officers gave commands for the suspects in the vehicle to drop their weapons, but the driver, a male, pulled a gun and pointed it at officers. The female passenger attempted to flee from officers, officials said.
Officers engaged in fire, striking both suspects, but stopped after they realized a baby was also in the vehicle at the time of the incident. It is believed that 18-19 gunshots were fired, Maddery said.
The suspects were taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
The woman suffered two gunshot wounds. The male suspect later died from his injuries. The baby and the officers were injured, police said.
An investigation remains ongoing.
