The Boston Red Sox need some right-handed pop in their lineup this offseason to balance a group of talented left-handed bats.
Alex Bregman’s name first surfaced in connection to Boston in a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal before the end of the 2024 regular season. Bregman would make sense in his right-handed impact bat and upgraded defense if he were to take over at third base. The question in Boston’s case would be the price for Bregman given the need for the Red Sox to spend on pitching this winter.
Early reports chased Bregman’s potential deal to $250 million or beyond, which would not have made sense for the Red Sox. Instead, a new update should play into Boston’s favor.
MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart reported Thursday that the Astros have an offer to Bregman for five years and $156 million, though Bregman may look closer to the $200 million range. Either way, that report should be great news for the Red Sox.
The move for Bregman in that case would make sense. His defense alongside Trevor Story marks a desperately needed upgrade for the American League’s worst unit over the last two seasons. He also balances the lineup and enriches the winning culture in the clubhouse as a two-time World Series champion. With the Winter Meetings coming up next week, the Red Sox could creep back into conversations for the 30-year-old.
The MLB Winter Meetings take place in Dallas from Dec. 9-12.
