A swift-acting Punjab Police ASI thwarted a potential assassination attempt on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal outside the Golden Temple. A former terrorist, Narain Singh Chaura, drew a gun, but ASI Jasbir Singh intervened, deflecting the shot. The bullet struck a wall, and Chaura was apprehended. Badal, performing penance at the time, was unharmed.
