Heung-min Son makes an interesting revelation about what he and Dejan Kulusevski had discussed about the latter’s position during the Antonio Conte era.
Kulusevski has made the attacking midfield role in his own at Tottenham, with the 24-year-old undoubtedly being the Lilywhites’ best performer this season.
In fact, the Swede has been so good as a number eight with the freedom to drift across the pitch that it is difficult to understand why he had not played there more often over the last few years.
A move to central midfield was certainly not on for Kulusevski during the Antonio Conte era, with the Italian preferring to play with just two holding players in the middle of the park, usually Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
However, Son has revealed that even during Conte’s time, the former Juventus man was keen on playing in midfield.
The Tottenham captain said (via The Standard): “Me and Deki always had these conversations [about position]. Even when Antonio Conte was here.
“He knew he was very strong and he wanted to play in the middle, which he suits perfectly. He gives you more legs and more energy, he’s doing really well with his back to the goal.”
Son has now also become the latest player to express his astonishment at Kulusevski’s running power. The South Korean praised his teammate for the hard work he has put in behind the scenes to get to the level he has this season.
Son added: “I think he has no lungs! He can run all the time. What I like about him is people see what he’s doing with the ball but behind the scenes, he’s working so hard.
“I just want to mention that, for the people not seeing that attitude and effort.”
