Colman Domingo is having a great 24 hours.
Just one day after being named the Gotham Award winner for “Sing Sing” in the Outstanding Lead Performance category, he has been feted by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) to receive the Montecito Award at their 40th annual awards gala.
He will accept the prize on Friday, Feb. 14, 2025, during an evening that will highlight his heralded performance as prison inmate Divine G in Greg Kwedar’s “Sing Sing.” Gold Derby predicts that Domingo will garner a Best Actor Oscar nomination for this role, one year after he contended in the same category for “Rustin.” He’s also a 2022 Emmy winner for guest-starring on “Euphoria.”
SBIFF’s Executive Director Roger Durling said, “Colman is such a committed performer and of the most extraordinary talents in the small screen, in theatre, and in film, and he makes it all seem effortless. His work in ‘Sing Sing’ is unforgettable.”
The Montecito Award is “named after one of the most beautiful and stylish areas in Santa Barbara,” according to the group. Past recipients of this prestigious honor include Jeffrey Wright, Angela Bassett, Penélope Cruz, Amanda Seyfried, Lupita Nyong’o, Melissa McCarthy, Saoirse Ronan, Isabelle Huppert, Sylvester Stallone, Jennifer Aniston, Oprah Winfrey, Daniel Day-Lewis, Geoffrey Rush, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, and Javier Bardem.
The 40th annual festival will take place between Feb. 4 and Feb. 15 at SBIFF’s Riviera Theatre and its new Film Center, plus the historic Arlington Theatre. In addition to movie screenings, other official events include filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, and celebrity tributes.
“Sing Sing” from A24 debuted in a limited release on July 12, before expanding to a wide release on Aug. 2. It is not yet available to watch for free online or on any streaming services.
