Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado will only waive his no-trade clause to go to a contender, a source told Katie Woo of The Athletic in a report posted Tuesday. The 33-year-old, eight-time All-Star has three years and $74 million left on his contract and would be willing to play first base or spend less time at third.
An Arenado deal is not necessarily in the, ahem, cards, but it is more likely than not, sources told Woo. She also reported that St. Louis is expected to shop pitchers Steven Matz and Ryan Helsley, who will both be free agents after the 2025 season. The Cardinals may also consider offers for Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray, though both are expected to stay with the club.
Any Arenado trade may have to wait for the Juan Soto Sweepstakes to conclude, with the teams who miss out on the offseason’s biggest prize looking to upgrade at a corner infield position instead, Woo reported. Many reports expect Soto to sign within the next 10 days.
Multiple outlets reported that the Boston Red Sox signed Aroldis Chapman to a one-year, $10.75 million contract. The 36-year-old was 5-5 with 14 saves, a 3.79 ERA and 1.34 WHIP for the Pirates this season while accumulating 0.4 bWAR.
Eight teams, including the Yankees, are showing interest in reliever Tommy Kahnle, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Kahnle went 0-2 with a 2.11 ERA and fanned 46 in 42.2 innings for the Yanks this year.
Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported that infielder Hyeseong Kim is expected to be posted by the Kiwoom Heroes of KBO Wednesday. That will start a 30-day window for him to sign with an MLB team. Kim hit 11 homers, posted an .841 OPS and stole 30 bases in 127 games in the KBO this year.
Morosi also reported that Rays LHP Jeffrey Springs (2-2, 3.27 ERA, seven starts) and RHP Pete Fairbanks (3-3, 3.57 ERA, 23 saves, 44 strikeouts in 45.1 innings) are trade candidates.
