The Kremlin has announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, to discuss the situation in Syria.
The Kremlin’s statement, released on Monday, December 2nd, mentioned that the conversation took place at the request of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This highlights Iran’s ongoing interest in coordinating with Russia on matters concerning Syria’s stability.
During the discussion, Putin and Pezeshkian condemned the “widespread aggression” of terrorist groups and criminal gangs, describing their actions as efforts to weaken Syria’s sovereignty, as well as its social and economic stability.
The Kremlin emphasized that both Russia and Iran reiterated their “unconditional” support for the “legitimate” actions of Bashar al-Assad’s government, aimed at restoring order, the constitution, and territorial integrity to Syria.
Both leaders stressed the importance of coordinating efforts between Russia and Iran within the framework of the “Astana Format,” with the involvement of Turkey, to address the Syrian crisis and contribute to the region’s stability.
The statement also mentioned that President Putin and President Pezeshkian reviewed the ongoing cooperation between Russia and Iran in various sectors, highlighting their growing partnership in multiple areas.
Russia and Iran remain key allies of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, which has recently faced severe attacks from Islamist rebels in Syria. Syrian and Russian warplanes reportedly bombed the city of Idlib, which is under rebel control, on Sunday.
The ongoing coordination between Russia and Iran underscores the strong strategic alliance between the two countries, particularly in their shared support for the Syrian government.
Despite the challenges posed by continued rebel violence, both nations remain committed to backing Assad’s regime and its efforts to restore stability in Syria.
