The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Small Craft Warning and High Surf Advisory for the island, effective from today.
The warnings highlight hazardous marine conditions expected to persist until at least Wednesday, December 4, with possible improvements anticipated by Thursday, December 5.
According to the BMS, the rough sea conditions are being driven by wind speeds of 20 to 25 knots generated by the North Atlantic high-pressure system. These conditions are expected to cause easterly swells ranging from 2.5m to 3.5m (8 to 11 ft) in open water.
The choppy seas and large swells pose significant risks to marine operators and beachgoers. Small vessels may face operational difficulties, and larger swells could result in injuries or loss of life if appropriate precautions are not taken.
The BMS warns that these conditions are hazardous, particularly for small craft operators, who are advised to remain in sheltered waters or dock their vessels in safe harbour. Beachgoers are encouraged to avoid entering the water unless absolutely necessary and to ensure lifeguards are present if visiting the beach.
A Small Craft Warning is issued when sustained winds of 25–33 knots, sea swells greater than 3 meters (10 feet), or reduced visibility (less than 5 km) are forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours. A High Surf Advisory, on the other hand, is issued when breaking wave action poses a threat to life or property in the surf zone within the next 36 hours.
This warning was issued at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, December 2 and will remain in effect until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, or earlier if conditions improve.
