Jamie Carragher changes his mind about where Spurs will finish this season, backing them to finish higher in the league table than he initially predicted.
Tottenham have not shown the sort of consistency that would make their supporters confident that they will be challenging near the top end of the table until the very end of the season.
Just when you think they have turned a corner after an impressive win, like the one against Manchester City, they follow that up with a lacklustre display such as the one they delivered against Fulham.
Their inconsistency is the main reason why Champions League qualification looks difficult for Ange Postecoglou‘s men this season, particularly given how tight things are at the top of the table.
However, Carragher has seen enough evidence this season to believe that Tottenham will be able to match their fifth-place finish from last season.
The pundit, who had predicted Man Utd to come fifth before the start of the season, is now confident that it will be Spurs who grab that position.
Carragher told Sky Sports: “Now in fifth place, this is the biggest mistake I’ve made in my predictions. I had Manchester United in fifth place in my predictions. I don’t think there’s a chance United finish in fifth position.
“I’d be very surprised if they finish in the top six. I’m going to go for Tottenham. I’ve said that Tottenham will miss out on the Champions League positions with Chelsea going in there. I’m going to put Tottenham in fifth position.”
There is no doubt that a fifth-place finish was more than respectable in Postecoglou’s first season in charge, but the club will want to see signs of progress this year.
The Tottenham head coach will have to deliver a trophy if he does not manage to get the club back into the Champions League this season.
Spurs managers over the past decade and a half and generally tended to lose their jobs if they have been unable to deliver Champions League football.
