The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to allow humanitarian aid to reach its residents. The council emphasized the urgent need for a halt to the ongoing conflict to address the dire humanitarian situation.
During the 45th GCC summit held in Kuwait on Sunday, December 1, the participants demanded an end to the war in Gaza. The foreign ministers of the GCC member states unanimously voiced their concerns over the escalation of violence.
In a statement, the GCC ministers condemned Israel’s continued military assaults on Gaza, targeting civilians, and forcing the displacement of innocent residents. They highlighted the suffering of non-combatants, including women and children.
The final communique of the summit stated, “Israel bears full responsibility for the ongoing violations and attacks against innocent and defenseless civilians, which have led to the martyrdom of tens of thousands in Gaza, most of them women and children. These actions by Israel are classified as war crimes and crimes against humanity under international law.”
The participants, including representatives from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, welcomed the ceasefire in Lebanon. The Emir of Kuwait also praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts to establish an international group aimed at the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
This summit marked the first time since 2017 that Kuwait hosted a GCC leaders’ meeting. The discussions at this summit focused on not only regional security issues but also the importance of a unified stance on the Palestinian cause.
The GCC’s call for a ceasefire is a critical moment in the ongoing conflict, as it reflects the growing concern within the Arab world over the humanitarian toll in Gaza. The regional bloc’s statement urges for immediate action to protect civilian lives and ensure the delivery of aid.
As the situation in Gaza remains dire, international pressure continues to mount on Israel to end its military operations and comply with international human rights laws. The GCC’s collective stance could play a significant role in shaping the future of the conflict, as it seeks to promote peace and stability in the region.
