Work on TAPI Pipeline project continues in Afghanistan

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban, posted a video on Monday stating, “The TAPI project is effectively underway on Afghanistan soil.”

Taliban and Turkmenistan officials officially launched the TAPI project for the second time this year in September, without the participation of Indian and Pakistani representatives.

In 2015, leaders from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and India met in the city of Mary, Turkmenistan, to inaugurate the TAPI pipeline project. The project’s operational phase in Afghanistan was launched again in 2017 by the leaders of these countries in Herat.

This project was officially launched for the second time on Wednesday, September 21, 2024, with the presence of Mullah Hassan Akhund, the Prime Minister of the Taliban, and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, the national leader of Turkmenistan.

The TAPI pipeline is a major regional project designed to transport natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India. It aims to strengthen energy cooperation and provide a sustainable energy supply to the region.

However, the project’s progress was hindered due to the security situation in Afghanistan, delaying its execution for several years. Despite this, the TAPI pipeline remains one of the most ambitious energy initiatives in the region.

The TAPI pipeline is 1,821 kilometers long and has an annual transport capacity of 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas, making it one of the largest regional infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile the TAPI pipeline represents a significant step forward in regional energy cooperation, its success will largely depend on maintaining security in Afghanistan. Continued collaboration among the involved countries will be crucial for overcoming the challenges and ensuring the project’s long-term viability.
