WHEN it comes to Christmas gifts for teachers, there’s a product that’s a go-to for many parents.
But if you’ve already splashed out on a themed mug for your kid to give their teacher, you might want to dig out the receipt.
It’s the time of year when students start thinking about what they’d like to take in to gift their teacher for Christmas[/caption] It’s bad news if you’ve already got a mug for your kid’s teacher, as it’s top of their most hate gift[/caption]As one woman admitted that the mugs – often wishing a ‘happy Christmas to the world’s best teacher‘ or something similar – are dreaded by those in the job.
On the Australian radio show Fitzy Wippa with Kate, one of the hosts said: “The number one hate for teachers are teacher themed mugs.
“The mugs that say the world’s best teachers.”
One teacher then called into the programme, and said: “Definitely, they’re cute, they are, but at the same time, you have your coffee mug at work and you have your coffee mugs at home, so you don’t need it!”
“Where does alcohol sit? Like giving them a bottle of wine or something?” one of the other presenters asked a male teacher who had called in.
“Look, it’s not too bad,” the teacher acknowledged.
“I did once get a bottle of Jim Beam from a kid and the card said, ‘I know I cause you to drink, so have a drink on me’.”
“What’s the WORST present you’ve ever given or received as a teacher?!” they captioned their video.
And other teachers quickly took to the comments section to share their gift stories, with many agreeing with the mug ban.
“We hate mugs, home baked goods, cards, plants, books,” one wrote.
“Yes to alcohol, chocolates, gift cards!”
“I HATE MUGSSSSS,” another raged.
As a third agreed: “100%… and I don’t drink coffee either so it’s worse!”
While others shared the hilarious presents they’ve received from students that have really stuck in their minds.
“My ‘fave’ teacher gift was the skirt that the student was conceived in!!!” one laughed.
“A colleague once received a cushion with a picture of her face printed one it,” another said.
IF you're stuck for ideas on what to give your teacher for Christmas, here's some ideas...
Personalised Stationery: A set of notecards or a planner with their name on it.
Gift Vouchers: For popular bookshops, coffee shops, or online retailers.
Handwritten Thank You Note: A heartfelt message from you or your child expressing gratitude.
Classroom Supplies: High-quality pens, markers, or a decorative organiser.
Homemade Treats: A batch of cookies, a cake, or a jar of homemade jam.
Potted Plant: A small plant for their desk or classroom window.
Relaxation Kit: Include items like a scented candle, bath salts, and a cosy blanket.
Books: A bestseller or a classic, depending on their taste.
Customised Mug: With a funny or inspirational quote related to teaching.
Experience Day: A voucher for an afternoon tea, a local event, or a workshop.
“When I taught 1st grade, I received a card from a student saying ‘you’re the second best teacher I’ve ever had’,” a third recalled.
However, there were some people in the comments who disagreed in teachers having a say in what they were given for Christmas from their students.
“Should be happy they’re getting anything at all!” one sighed.
“This sounds very ungrateful – especially if the student picked this gift themselves!” another added.
But you’ll most probably have a better response if you’ve bought alcohol for the teacher – especially if it comes with a funny note[/caption]
