Ange Postecoglou has pointed out that Dominic Solanke’s unavailability severely dented Tottenham against Fulham, given the attackers that the side were already missing.
Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Fulham this afternoon, with the performance resembling the one the Lilywhites delivered in their last home loss against Ipswich Town.
Spurs did not pose much of a threat going forward and looked vulnerable at the back every time Marco Silva’s men forayed into the final third.
In fact, prior to Tom Cairney’s red card in the 86th minute, the away side looked more likely to score a winner than Tottenham.
Tottenham were already without Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Rodrigo Bentancur, Richarlison, Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert.
Solanke was also ruled out just before the game after coming down with illness, forcing Postecoglou to play Heung-min Son upfront.
When asked if the absentees like Solanke are to blame for his side’s lacklustre showing, the Australian said (via Alasdair Gold): “Doesn’t help. That on top of Richy been out, Wilson being out, Mikey Moore being out. We’re pretty short up top.
“People are going to use City as a reference point but that night I was able to bring Werner and Johnson off the bench and Vicario was in goal.”
Tottenham’s injury situation can accurately be described as a crisis at the moment, but the club cannot say that they did not see this coming.
Postecoglou’s style is physically demanding and there were a lot of muscle injuries in the squad around the same time last year.
The squad’s lack of depth is now being exposed and the club have to address that with two or three additions in January.
