The Red Sox reportedly are a finalist in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, but Boston could pivot to other high-impact bats if it doesn’t land the superstar outfielder.
Teoscar Hernández has frequently been mentioned as a potential target for the Red Sox, who pursued the 2024 World Series champion last offseason. But if Boston brings its attention to the infield, Alex Bregman could be a player to keep an eye on.
Bregman’s free agency recently was spotlighted by The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, who was asked about the third baseman’s chances of landing with the Tigers. Bowden doesn’t see Bregman landing in Detroit, but he’s not ruling out Boston.
“I believe Bregman wants to return to the Astros if they’ll step up and match his free-agent market value,” Bowden wrote. “If he were to leave Houston, the two spots that make the most sense to me are Boston and Philadelphia because of the dimensions of their home ballparks.”
Bregman obviously would make more sense for the Red Sox if they decide to change Rafael Devers’ primary position this offseason. But even if Boston keeps Devers at the hot corner, Bregman still could be in play for Craig Breslow and company since he reportedly is open to playing second base.
So, while Bregman isn’t a lock to call Fenway Park home, the possibility appears to be on the table at a minimum.
