Manchester United climbed into the top half of the Premier League table following their 4-0 win versus Everton at Old Trafford. In the process, the club are just four points adrift of the Champions League places as well as arch-rivals Manchester City.
The Red Devils had a poor start to the top-flight campaign under manager Erik ten Hag, but their fortunes have changed since the Dutchman’s departure. United picked up four points in a couple of games under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.
They have attained a similar points tally under new manager Ruben Amorim. The victory over the Toffees has seen them climb back into the top 10. The club are now placed ninth in the standings and surprisingly with a better goal difference than City.
City have had a dreadful slump under manager Pep Guardiola. They lost their fourth league game on the bounce after Liverpool outclassed them yesterday. Their goal difference currently stands at +3, one less than United after their rout of the Toffees.
Meanwhile, United’s defensive record has been quite impressive despite the patchy league form. They are the joint-second-best in the Premier League with only 13 goals conceded. On the contrary, City have already shipped 19 goals in the season.
It is quite clear that there is a momentum shift at the moment. United are only four points behind their arch-rivals and they could potentially leapfrog the reigning champions when they meet at the Etihad Stadium in the middle of December.
Prior to that, United face Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in the league. They have a tricky trip to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. The game should provide clarity over how much the club have improved under Amorim’s tutelage.
