Widespread unrest in Syria: Rebels advance in the heart of Syria, capture Hama after Aleppo
Reports from Arab media indicate that rebels in Syria, led by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, have occupied at least 16 towns in the Hama countryside in central Syria as part of their ongoing advances.
Al-Arabiya reported on Sunday, December 1, Rami Abdulrahman, the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, stated that armed opposition groups have taken control of at least 16 towns in the northern outskirts of Hama.
SANA, Syria’s state-run news agency, confirmed the insurgents’ advance into the northern Hama countryside. However, quoting a statement from the Syrian Ministry of Defense, it reported that government forces had engaged the insurgents and successfully prevented any breaches or infiltrations into the area.
In recent days, opposition forces fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have made significant progress in their military campaigns. They have not only captured the city of Aleppo in northern Syria and taken control of its airport but have also seized large portions of Hama in central Syria.
Reports also indicate that Assad’s allies, including Russia, have carried out extensive airstrikes on positions held by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Idlib.
It is reported that Abu Mohammad al-Julani, the leader of the group, may have been killed in these strikes, though this has not yet been officially confirmed.
The recent advances by insurgent forces in Syria highlight the intensifying conflict in the country, with opposition groups making significant territorial gains.
The ongoing airstrikes and military confrontations suggest that the situation remains volatile, with no immediate resolution in sight. The conflict’s impact continues to be felt in both the local population and the broader geopolitical landscape of the region.
