Former Israeli Defense Minister warns of ethnic cleansing in Gaza

Moshe Ya’alon, the former Israeli Defense Minister, strongly criticized the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, labeling Israel’s actions in Gaza as “war crimes” and “ethnic cleansing.” These statements triggered harsh reactions from Israeli officials.

Ya’alon, who served as Chief of Staff and Defense Minister from 2013 to 2016, told Israeli media that the far-right wing of Netanyahu’s cabinet is intent on expelling Palestinians from northern Gaza and aims to re-establish Jewish settlements in the area.

In an interview, Ya’alon warned, “I feel compelled to alert people about what is happening and what is being hidden from us. War crimes are taking place here.”

Netanyahu’s party condemned Ya’alon’s remarks, calling them “defamatory lies.” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar also dismissed Ya’alon’s accusations, describing them as baseless.

Sa’ar stated, “Everything Israel does is in accordance with international law, and it is unfortunate that Ya’alon doesn’t recognize the damage he has done to Israel’s reputation by not retracting his words.”

Recently, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, the former Israeli Defense Minister, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Both Netanyahu and Gallant denied these allegations.

However, Ya’alon warned in a television interview that Israel is on a path toward “conquest, annexation, and ultimately ethnic cleansing.” He expressed concern about the direction of the country’s actions.

Following the surprise Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of over 250, Israel launched a large-scale military operation in Gaza. As of now, the operation has led to the deaths of over 44,400 people and the displacement of nearly the entire population of Gaza.

Many countries around the world have condemned Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied territories of 1967, labeling it illegal and an obstacle to achieving peace. The ongoing dispute over settlement policies remains a significant issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The situation in Gaza has sparked intense debate and criticism, with conflicting views on Israel’s military actions and settlement policies. While Israel’s government defends its actions, international bodies and former Israeli officials like Ya’alon express concerns about the long-term consequences of these policies.
