In recent years, Angela Merkel has made a surprising reappearance—not in politics, but as the star of a bestselling crime comedy series. German author David Safier created Miss Merkel, which imagines the former Chancellor enjoying her retirement by solving mysteries, accompanied by her flatulent dog, Helmut.
The novels have proved a huge success, with the work translated into numerous languages including this month in English. It has also been adapted into a comedy TV series. Gavin Lee is joined by David Safier and British translator Jamie Bulloch. They discuss 'Merkel-Mania' and the former German Chancellor perfectly suits crime comedy.
