Donald Trump Saturday made a threat to foreign countries on social media, leading one expert to say it amounts to "weaponization of the dollar."
Trump over the weekend took to Truth Social, saying, "The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER."
"We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy," he added. "They can go find another 'sucker!' There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in International Trade, and any Country that tries should wave goodbye to America."

Rachel Ziemba, an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, said that an "actual common currency was unlikely given divergence within the growing group, but payment experimentation for a few countries was in test/pilot."
Journalist Michael Tracey wrote, "The idea that Trump had some secret affinity for BRICS is one of the dumbest theories that ever got circulated over the past several years."
