I’m my footballer son’s agent – how do I negotiate terms? Karren Brady gives career advice

APPRENTICE star and West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady answers your careers questions, plus try our money-saving tips.

Here, Karren gives advice to a reader who wants to turn their side hustle into their main job.

Q) My son has just received his first professional football contract.

As his mum, I have decided to represent him myself in order to avoid agent fees and poor representation, and I want to protect as many of his assets as possible.

However, I understand that most clubs prefer to deal with an agent, and, as a woman in football, sometimes you are not taken seriously.

How can I overcome these challenges, and do you have any advice about how to negotiate terms in a boardroom full of men?

As his mother, it’s natural to want the best for your child, so I think it’s fantastic you’re stepping up to represent him.

If you’re in England, you must first register with the Football Association as an intermediary.

You will undergo a “test of good character and reputation” as well as a criminal record check.

Next, familiarise yourself with the industry in detail – understanding standard terms, bonuses and conditions will not only enhance your knowledge, but also demonstrate to people you are dealing with that you are well-informed.

Remember, networking is powerful.

Engage with the club staff, coaches and even other agents.

The more you connect with key people in the industry, the more they’ll come to see you as a valuable partner in your son’s career.

When negotiating terms, it’s important to project confidence and professionalism.

Dress appropriately for the occasion, organise and send round a clear agenda beforehand and, crucially, come to the meeting well-prepared.

Communicate assertively but calmly, making it clear your primary aim is to secure the best agreement for your son.
