Former India batter Ajay Jadeja backed head coach Gautam Gambhir and said that is ‘unfair’ to criticize him given the short time he has been in the new role. Gambhir took over the reins of the Indian team from Rahul Dravid earlier in July this year.
Gambhir’s first series as a coach came against Sri Lanka where after winning the T20I series, India slumped to defeat in the ODI series against the Lankan Lions.
The Men in Blue then went on to dismantle Bangladesh in both the Test and T20I series on home soil before getting thrashed by New Zealand in the 3-match Test series where Gambhir’s side lost all 3 Tests. The defeat saw Gambhir receive heavy criticism especially from fans.
“I think you are being unfair to him. If you will start judging people on the basis of their coaching role or whatever way it is being looked at, it is too short a time to for people to be judged,” Jadeja told PTI.
“If you are not convinced that he is good, then one performance here or there will be able to convince anyone. I don’t think it is the time to judge him, it is the time we should enjoy him,” Jadeja added.
The former Indian cricketer believes that there is no point in judging Gambhir when it has only been 6 months since he has taken up the head coach position.
“So, there are phases and it will come, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. So, I won’t go into that direction and start judging him (Gambhir) in six months,” Jadeja said.
“You knew what you were asking for and what you were getting. He is a very clear-cut person and he has made it clear throughout his life. So, what your are seeing now is what everyone expected of him to do,” Jadeja added.
India will be facing Australia in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar series which is set to take place in Adelaide and will commence from December 6.
